Sold out? Launching next month? Taking limited orders? A waitlist captures demand now and turns it into sales later. Instagram comments are a good place to start one, as long as you plan how you will reach people later.
The challenge
Instagram only lets you message someone within 24 hours of their last message, or reply once to a comment within 7 days. If someone comments "notify me" today, you cannot DM them on restock day three weeks later through automation. So the waitlist itself must live where you can contact them: WhatsApp, email or SMS, with their consent.
The flow
- Post: "Sold out! Comment NOTIFY to get on the restock list"
- Automation DM:
You're almost on the list, {name}! Tap below and send the message on WhatsApp, and we'll tell you the moment it's back.
[Join the waitlist]
- The button opens WhatsApp with "Please add me to the restock list for the indigo saree"
- You save the number in a WhatsApp broadcast list or label
Or link to a short form asking for name and phone or email.
Restock day
- Broadcast to the WhatsApp list
- Post a reel: "It's back. Comment LINK"
- Change the old post's automation to send the product link
Waitlists for services
Salons, studios and coaches can use the same flow for "next batch" or "slots open on Monday".
Tips
- Say how many pieces or slots there will be; honest scarcity works
- Give the waitlist first access, a few hours before public
- Delete the list after the launch if you said you would
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep the waitlist inside Instagram?
You can keep a list of usernames, but you cannot message them later through automation. Use WhatsApp or email.
Do I need consent to message people on WhatsApp?
Yes. Joining the list by sending you a message is a clear opt-in. Say what you will send.
How long should a waitlist stay open?
As long as the launch is planned. Tell people the expected date.
What if more people join than I have stock for?
First come, first served, and say so in the waitlist message.
