What a follow-gate is
A follow-gate asks someone to follow your account before they receive what they asked for. On Instagram it works like this: a person comments your keyword, DM Flow sends a message saying the link is for followers, they follow and tap a button, and the link arrives. DM Flow checks the follow with Instagram itself, so tapping the button without following does not unlock the link.
It is one of the simplest ways to grow followers from a reel that is already getting views, because the person has a clear reason to follow right now.
How it works in DM Flow
- Someone comments your keyword, for example
guide. - They get your opening DM with a button.
- When they tap it, DM Flow checks whether they follow you.
- Not following yet: they get your follow-gate message with an "I'm following" button.
- Following: they get the link straight away and are marked as a follower in your contacts.
The follow-gate is included in the Growth and Pro plans.
When to use it, and when not to
Use a follow-gate for:
- Free guides, templates, presets and checklists
- Giveaways and early access to a drop
- Content creators growing an audience
Skip it for:
- Price and "buy now" links. A buyer should never have to work to pay you.
- Customer support or order questions
Writing a follow-gate that does not annoy people
- Say why: "This one is for followers only, it takes 2 seconds."
- Keep the button clear: "I'm following".
- Deliver what you promised, immediately.
See follow-gate message templates for ready-to-use wording.
Frequently asked questions
Does Instagram allow follow-gates?
DM Flow only messages people who commented and then replied, through Meta's official API. The follow check happens after the person messages you, inside Instagram's 24-hour messaging window.
Can people fake it by tapping "I'm following"?
Tapping the button alone does not work: DM Flow asks Instagram whether they follow you before sending the link. In the rare case Instagram does not answer three times in a row, DM Flow sends the link anyway, so a real follower is never locked out.
Will people unfollow afterwards?
Some do. Offers that match your normal content keep more of the followers you gain. Read growing followers with follow-gates.
Is the follow-gate on the free plan?
No. It is included in Growth and Pro. The free plan sends the link straight away.
