Thousands of Indian sellers run real businesses on Instagram with no website at all. They use a catalogue, WhatsApp and UPI. The weak point is always the same: answering every "price?" and "available?" fast enough. Here is a setup that works, and where automation fits.
What you need
- An Instagram Business account
- WhatsApp Business (the free app is enough to start)
- A way to show products with prices: a catalogue
- UPI or a payment link for prepaid orders
- A courier arrangement, or a shipping aggregator
Step 1: Make a catalogue people can open from a link
Options, from simplest:
- WhatsApp Business catalogue: add products with photos and prices, share its link
- A Google Drive PDF of designs and prices
- A free store page from a store builder or link-in-bio tool
- Instagram Shop, if you qualify
The catalogue link is what you will send in DMs.
Step 2: Post content that sells
- Reels showing the product being worn or used
- Carousels with details: fabric, size, care
- Stories with customer photos (with permission) and stock updates
Each product post should end with a keyword: "Comment PRICE for the price and catalogue."
Step 3: Answer every price request instantly
This is where most sellers lose orders. With comment-to-DM automation:
- Keywords:
price, rate, kitna, details, available - Public reply: "Sent you the price in DM 😊"
- DM: price or catalogue link, and a WhatsApp button to order
Hi {name}! This one is ₹1,450, with free shipping. All colours are in the catalogue. To order, tap below and send us your size on WhatsApp.

Step 4: Take the order on WhatsApp
- Confirm product, size, colour
- Share the total with shipping
- Take payment by UPI or a payment link, or confirm COD
- Ask for the full address with pincode
- Send the tracking number once shipped
Saved replies in WhatsApp Business make this quick.
Step 5: Handle COD carefully
COD increases orders and returns. Common approaches: COD for orders under a limit, a small COD fee, or a partial advance.
Step 6: Keep a simple record
A spreadsheet with order date, customer, product, amount, payment status and tracking. It is enough until you are doing dozens of orders a day.
When to get a website
When you have steady daily orders, a website adds a checkout, payment gateway, inventory and abandoned cart recovery. Until then, Instagram plus WhatsApp is fine, and automation keeps you from drowning in comments.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need GST registration to sell on Instagram?
It depends on your turnover, what you sell and whether you sell across states. Ask a CA; rules differ for online sellers.
Can I use Instagram Shopping without a website?
Instagram Shopping has eligibility rules that have historically required a website domain. Check current requirements in the app.
Is a WhatsApp catalogue link allowed in Instagram DMs?
Yes.
Will automation work with a small following?
Yes. Automation works the same at 500 followers or 500,000.
