From the outside, a bot and an official tool can promise similar things: "automatic DMs", "grow faster". Underneath, they work in completely different ways, and only one of them is allowed.
How an official tool works
- You log in on instagram.com and approve specific permissions.
- Meta gives the tool a token that only allows those actions.
- Instagram sends the tool events (a new comment, a new message) through webhooks.
- The tool replies by calling Meta's API, which applies Meta's rules and limits.
The tool never sees your password. You can revoke it from Instagram's settings in two taps.
How a bot works
- You type your Instagram username and password into the bot's website or app, sometimes an OTP too.
- The bot logs in as you from its own servers, pretending to be a phone.
- It taps, scrolls, follows, likes and messages as if it were you.
Instagram's security systems are built to spot this. Typical outcomes: suspicious login alerts, action blocks, forced password resets, and restricted accounts.
Side by side
| Official API tool | Bot | |
|---|---|---|
| Asks for your password | Never | Yes |
| Allowed by Instagram | Yes | No |
| Can DM strangers | No | Claims to |
| Can DM commenters | Yes, within Meta's rules | Unreliably |
| Revoke access | Instagram settings | Change password and hope |
| Risk to account | Low when used as intended | High |
Common bot promises
If you see these, it is not an official tool:
- "DM all your followers"
- "Send DMs to followers of any account"
- "Auto follow / unfollow"
- "Unlimited DMs"
- "Works on personal accounts"
None of these are possible through Meta's official API.
Questions to ask any tool
- Where do I log in? (Must be instagram.com.)
- Which Meta API do you use? (Instagram API with Instagram Login or Facebook Login.)
- Do you have a privacy policy and data deletion page?
- Who runs the company, and where?
- Can I remove access from Instagram's Apps and websites page?
DM Flow answers these on its privacy policy, data deletion and contact pages.
Frequently asked questions
Are browser extensions safe?
Extensions that click and type in Instagram's website for you behave like bots. Avoid them for messaging.
Is "Meta Business Partner" status required?
No. Official access comes from Meta's app review for specific permissions. Partner badges are a separate programme.
Can an official tool post for me?
Only if it asks for publishing permissions. A comment-to-DM tool does not need them.
What if a tool asks for my Facebook password?
Same rule: log in only on facebook.com or instagram.com, never in a tool's own form.
