Every comment-to-DM tool asks for the same thing first: a Professional Instagram account. Instagram offers two kinds, Business and Creator. Both work for automation. The choice depends on what you are and what else you need.
Why a personal account will not work
Meta's messaging and comment APIs are only available for Professional accounts. A personal account has no way to grant a tool permission to read comments or send DMs on its behalf. Switching is free, takes a minute and does not delete any posts or followers.
To switch: open your profile, tap the menu, go to Settings and privacy, then Account type and tools, then Switch to professional account.
Business vs Creator at a glance
| Business | Creator | |
|---|---|---|
| Works with DM automation | Yes | Yes |
| Contact buttons (call, email, directions) | Yes | Yes |
| Shopping / product tags | Yes, after approval | Limited |
| Music library for reels | Some licensed tracks are restricted | Wider library |
| Category label on profile | Business categories | Creator categories |
| Inbox layout | Standard | Primary and General tabs |
| Best for | Shops, brands, services | Influencers, coaches, public figures |
Instagram changes these details from time to time, so check the current options in the app.
Which should a brand choose?
If you sell products, especially if you want product tags and Instagram Shopping, choose Business. It also connects naturally with Meta Business Suite and ads.
Which should a creator choose?
If you are a person rather than a company, such as a fitness coach, a cook or an educator, choose Creator. You get the wider music library and an inbox designed to separate close contacts from everyone else. Automation works the same.
Does the choice affect automation?
Not in practice. Comment-to-DM, public replies, follow checks and keyword triggers all work on both. One thing to check on Creator accounts: automated DMs from a tool may land in the General tab of your inbox rather than Primary. That is your inbox, not the customer's, so it does not change delivery.
Do I need a Facebook Page?
Not any more for most tools. Meta's newer Instagram API with Instagram Login lets a tool connect directly to your Instagram Professional account without a Facebook Page. Some older tools still use the Facebook Login route, which requires a linked Page. DM Flow uses Instagram Login, so you sign in with Instagram and approve permissions on Instagram's own screen.
One more setting to check
Whatever account type you choose, make sure messages can be accessed by connected tools. In the Instagram app: Settings and privacy, Messages and story replies, Message controls, then turn on Allow access to messages under Connected tools. If this is off, a tool can read comments but cannot send DMs.
Frequently asked questions
Will switching to a Professional account reduce my reach?
There is no reliable evidence of that. Reach depends on your content and how people respond to it.
Can I switch back later?
Yes, between Business, Creator and Personal, at any time. A tool connected to your account will stop working if you switch to Personal.
Can a private account use automation?
Professional accounts are public. If you need a private account, automation is not available.
Does the account need a minimum number of followers?
No. Automation works from day one, whatever your follower count.
