Giveaways bring a flood of comments. Without help, entrants get no confirmation, rules get lost in the caption, and the comment section turns into "is this real?". Automation fixes the confusing parts.
Before you start: the rules
Instagram's promotion guidelines say that if you run a promotion, you are responsible for running it lawfully, and you must include:
- Official rules
- Offer terms and eligibility (for example, age and location)
- A statement that the promotion is not sponsored, endorsed or administered by Instagram
Instagram also asks you not to encourage people to tag content inaccurately, such as tagging themselves in photos they are not in.
In India, check whether your giveaway could be treated as a lottery or game of chance under state laws; a skill element or no purchase requirement is common practice. Ask a lawyer for large prizes.
Setting up the automation
- Scope: the giveaway post only
- Trigger: any comment, or a specific keyword like
WIN - Public reply variations: "You're in! Check your DMs ๐", "Entry received โ ", "Good luck! Details in your inbox"
- DM:
You're entered, {name}! ๐ Winner announced on 25 October in our stories. Full rules here ๐
[Read the rules]
The DM gives every entrant the rules and the date, and proves the giveaway is real.
Should you add a follow-gate?
Many giveaways require following. A follow-gate can verify it for each entrant. Mention it in the rules, and remember that the check only happens when the entrant taps the button in the DM.
Watch your plan limits
Giveaways get many comments. If your automation plan has a monthly DM limit, a big giveaway can use it up. Either use a keyword so only real entrants count, or check your limit first. Also note Meta's hourly sending limits on very large giveaways.
Picking the winner
- Export the list of people who commented (your tool's contact export helps)
- Remove duplicates and anyone who broke the rules
- Pick at random, ideally on a screen recording
- Announce in stories and DM the winner manually
After the giveaway
- Switch off the automation, or change the DM to "This giveaway has ended, here's our current offer"
- Thank everyone in a post
- Follow up with entrants through your next posts, not unsolicited DMs
Frequently asked questions
Can I DM all entrants after the giveaway?
Only within Meta's rules: if they replied to you in the last 24 hours. Otherwise, announce publicly.
Should I require tagging friends?
It is common, but it can create spammy comments. "Comment your favourite product" gives better comments.
Can bots enter my giveaway?
Yes. Check winners' profiles before announcing.
Is it OK to ask people to share the post to their story?
You can ask, but you cannot verify it automatically. Make it optional.
