Every legitimate comment-to-DM tool, from ManyChat to DM Flow, is built on one Meta feature: private replies. If you understand its rules, you understand what any tool can do with comments, and you can spot claims that are too good to be true.
What a private reply is
A private reply is a direct message sent to someone in response to their comment on your post. It arrives in their inbox, linked to their comment. Meta created it so businesses could move a public question into a private conversation.
The rules, from Meta's documentation
- One message per comment. Only one private reply can be sent for each comment.
- Within 7 days. The reply must be sent within 7 days of when the comment was made.
- Live videos are different. For comments on Instagram Live, private replies can only be sent while the broadcast is running.
- Follow-ups need a response. Further messages can only be sent if the person responds, and within 24 hours of that response.
- Professional accounts only. The post must belong to a Business or Creator account that has granted the tool comment and message permissions.
Private replies work on comments on posts, reels, and ads, among other surfaces Meta lists.
What this means in practice
The first message has to count. You get one. Either it delivers what was asked for, or it contains a button that gets the person to respond, which opens the 24-hour window for more.
No back-dating. A tool switched on today cannot DM people who commented two weeks ago.
No drip sequences from comments. "Comment and get five messages over a week" is not possible within the rules.
Every tool has the same ceiling. If a tool promises things beyond these rules, it is either using unofficial methods or overselling.
Private reply vs public reply
| Public reply | Private reply | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | Under the comment | In the commenter's inbox |
| Who sees it | Everyone | Only the commenter |
| Limit | Normal comment behaviour | One per comment, within 7 days |
| Best for | "Sent, check your DMs" | The link, price or content |
Most automations use both. See auto reply to comments.
Where the message lands
If the commenter follows you, the DM usually appears in their main inbox. If not, it may appear in message requests. That is why a public reply like "Sent! Check your requests" helps.
Frequently asked questions
Can I send a second private reply if the first failed?
Meta allows one per comment. If nothing was delivered, a tool may retry within the 7 days; if one was delivered, no.
Can I reply privately to comments on someone else's post?
No. Only comments on your own account's media.
Does a private reply count against my hourly limit?
Yes, it is a message sent through the API.
Can I attach an image to a private reply?
Meta supports different message types, but tools mostly use text with buttons for comment replies.
