Search any creator forum and you will find someone whose account was blocked "because of automation". Look closer and the story is almost always the same: a tool that logged in with their password, or messages sent to people who never asked. Here is a realistic picture of the risk.
What Instagram is protecting against
Instagram restricts behaviour that looks like spam or fake activity:
- Unsolicited messages to strangers
- Mass following, unfollowing, liking or commenting
- Logins from many devices or locations at once
- Repeated identical text at high speed
- Content that people report
These rules apply whether a human or a script does it.
Why official comment-to-DM is low risk
A tool on Meta's official API:
- Only messages people who commented, which is what Meta's private replies feature is for
- Sends through Meta's servers, within Meta's rate limits
- Never logs in as you or imitates your phone
- Has been through Meta's app review for the permissions it uses
This is a Meta-designed feature used by thousands of businesses. Using it as intended is not a ban risk.
Where it can still go wrong
Even with an official tool, an account can attract restrictions through what it sends:
- Misleading bait. "Comment for a free iPhone" with no giveaway behind it.
- Unrelated links. Promising a recipe and sending a sales page.
- Suspicious domains. Links to sites flagged for scams or malware.
- Heavy reporting. If many people report your messages as spam, Instagram takes notice.
Warning signs
- An "action blocked" notice when commenting or messaging
- Instagram asking you to confirm your identity or change your password
- A sudden drop in DMs delivered in your tool's log
If you see these, pause automations, check you have not connected any password-based tools, and read action blocked on DMs.
A short safety checklist
- Connected only through Instagram's permission screen
- No other app holds your password
- Two-factor authentication is on
- Keywords are specific
- Public replies have two or three variations
- The DM delivers what the caption promised
- Links point to your own site or well-known platforms
Frequently asked questions
Has anyone been banned for using ManyChat?
Official tools are not themselves a reason for bans. Accounts are restricted for behaviour, such as spam, which can happen with any tool or none.
Is it safer to reply by hand?
Manual replies follow the same rules. Copy-pasting the same message to hundreds of people by hand can look more spammy than varied automated replies through the API.
Can a competitor get me banned by commenting my keyword?
They would only trigger your own reply to them. That is not a violation on your side.
What if my account was restricted anyway?
Use Instagram's in-app appeal or Account Status page, remove unknown apps, and pause automations until it is resolved.
