Reels are where most new people find you. They also produce the comment spikes that are impossible to answer by hand. A reel can sit quietly for a day and then get 600 comments overnight. Automation is how you answer all of them while the reel is hot.
Why reels need automation more than posts
- Comments arrive in bursts. Reach on reels is uneven. A spike can come hours or days after posting.
- Commenters are often strangers. They do not follow you yet, so your reply may land in their message Requests. A public reply telling them to check DMs matters more.
- Attention is short. Someone who commented "price" on a reel at 11 pm has scrolled past 50 more reels by 11:10.
Setting it up for a reel
- Create the automation before you post, or immediately after.
- Select the reel in your tool's post picker.
- Use a keyword that is said or shown in the reel itself.
- Turn on public replies with two or three variations.
- Write a DM that delivers the exact thing shown in the reel.
If your reels follow a pattern, such as one product per reel, consider an automation on every post with an evergreen keyword like PRICE that sends your full catalogue, plus a specific automation on each reel for its own product. In DM Flow, the reel-specific automation takes priority when both match.
Put the keyword in the reel
Most viewers never open the caption. Use at least two of these:
- On-screen text in the first three seconds: "Comment PRICE 👇"
- Saying it in the voice-over
- On-screen text at the end, where people decide whether to act
- First line of the caption
- A pinned comment from your account
What to send
The DM should match the reel exactly:
- A reel about one saree: that saree's page, with price and colours.
- A reel comparing three products: a page or post with all three.
- A tutorial reel: the full written steps, the template, or the product list.
When a reel goes viral
A good problem. Things to know:
- Hourly limits apply. Meta limits how many messages an account can send per hour. On a huge spike, the latest commenters can get their DM late, or Meta can refuse some messages once the cap is reached. Your tool's log will show it. See Instagram DM limits per hour.
- The 7-day rule. Private replies must go out within 7 days of the comment, so a delay of a few hours is not a problem.
- Check your plan's monthly limit. A free plan can run out in one night. Know your limit before you post something you expect to do well.
- Watch the link page. Thousands of people may open it in an hour. Make sure the stock and the page can handle it.
Reels and follow-gates
Viral reels reach many non-followers, which makes a follow-gate tempting. For free content (a guide, a recipe), it can bring hundreds of followers from one reel. For product links, it adds friction at the moment of purchase. Decide based on what you are offering. More in follow-gated DMs.
Measuring a reel's automation
For each reel, note:
- Views (from Instagram insights)
- Comments that matched the keyword
- DMs delivered
- Link taps and sales (use a UTM tag per reel)
Comments divided by views tells you how well the call to action works. Taps divided by DMs tells you how well the message works. We explain the full set in measuring comment-to-DM results.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work on remixes and collabs?
Automation runs on posts published by your connected account. For collab posts, comments appear on the shared post; whether your tool receives them can depend on whose account the post belongs to.
Should I reply by hand as well?
Reply by hand to questions the automation cannot answer, and to complaints. Let the automation handle the repeated requests.
Can I add an automation after the reel is already viral?
Yes. It answers new comments from that moment. Comments older than 7 days cannot get a private reply.
Does automating reels affect reach?
The automation itself does not. A clear call to action usually brings more comments, which is a good signal for reach.
