A follow-gate sends your link only to people who follow you. It works by asking Instagram, at the moment the person taps the button, "does this person follow this account?" Usually the answer is instant. Occasionally someone follows and taps within a second or two, and the gate still says they are not following.
Why it happens
- Instagram needs a moment. A brand-new follow can take a few seconds to show up in what Instagram reports to apps.
- They followed a different account. Brands with several accounts see this often.
- They followed and unfollowed. Some people do this to test the gate.
- Follow requests on private business accounts. If your account is private, a follow is only a request until you accept it. Automation needs a public professional account anyway.
What a good follow-gate does
- Asks the person to follow, with a button to try again
- Checks the follow with Instagram itself, not just trusts the tap
- Lets them tap again after following, and sends the link as soon as the follow shows up
That is how DM Flow works. If the first check is too early, the person taps the button again a few seconds later and gets the link.
How to reduce "I followed but nothing happened"
- In the follow-gate message, say: "Follow, wait 5 seconds, then tap the button."
- Keep the button text clear, such as "I've followed ✅".
- Make sure people are following the right account. Put your handle in the message.

Which plans include the follow-gate?
In DM Flow, Growth and Pro. The free plan sends the link without a follow check.
