Reels are the cheapest way to reach new people on Instagram. Most of that reach is wasted because viewers have no simple next step. A lead generation system gives them one, and comment-to-DM is the bridge.
The system in five parts
- The offer: what viewers get for raising a hand
- The reel: a hook that earns the next 10 seconds
- The CTA: one clear action, usually a comment keyword
- The DM: delivers the offer and captures the lead
- The follow-up: turns a lead into a customer
1. The offer
A lead magnet is something useful enough that people will comment for it. Good ones are specific and quick to use:
- A price list or catalogue (for sellers, this is the best lead magnet there is)
- A size guide, fabric guide, "what to wear to a sangeet" lookbook
- A free class, checklist, template or recipe
- An early-access link or a first-order discount
Vague offers ("DM for details") get few comments. See lead magnet ideas.
2. The reel
The reel's job is to make the offer feel relevant:
- Show the product or result in the first two seconds
- Say who it is for ("If you're planning a December wedding...")
- Tease the offer ("I've put every price in one list")
3. The CTA
Say it and show it:
"Comment LIST and I'll send you the full price list."
On screen, in the first line of the caption, and in a pinned comment. More CTA lines.
4. The DM
The automation sends:
Here's the full list, {name}! Prices, colours and delivery times are all inside. Want help picking? Reply here 😊

To capture a lead you can contact again, the link can go to:
- A WhatsApp chat with a pre-filled message (you get their number when they send it)
- A short form asking for name and phone, with a clear line on how you will use it
- A page with a "notify me" signup
5. The follow-up
Instagram only lets you message within 24 hours of their last message, so the real follow-up happens where you have permission:
- WhatsApp conversations
- Email, if they signed up
- Your next reel, for everyone else (retargeting through content)
Metrics to track per reel
| Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Views | Reach of the hook |
| Comments with keyword ÷ views | Strength of the offer and CTA |
| Link taps ÷ DMs sent | Strength of the DM |
| Leads ÷ link taps | Strength of the landing page or form |
| Sales ÷ leads | Strength of your follow-up |
Fix the weakest step first. See measuring results.
Example: a coaching institute
- Offer: "Free JEE chapter-wise PYQ sheet"
- Reel: a teacher solving one tricky question in 20 seconds
- CTA: "Comment PYQ for the full sheet"
- DM: link to a form (name, class, phone) that sends the PDF
- Follow-up: counsellor calls within a day, with consent
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a follow-gate for lead generation?
Not necessarily. If the lead is the phone number, the follow is a bonus. A gate adds friction.
Can I collect emails inside Instagram DMs?
Some tools ask for an email in the conversation. A simple form link works with any tool.
How many reels should I make per offer?
Several. Repeat a winning offer with different hooks.
Is this allowed?
Yes, when people ask by commenting and you use the official API. Follow the DPDP Act when collecting contact details.
