Many automation platforms, ManyChat included, price their plans by active contacts. It is a fair model for chatbot conversations. For Instagram comment-to-DM, it has a side effect: your bill tracks your comments, which are the least predictable number on Instagram.
What an active contact is
In general terms, it is a person your automations interacted with during the billing month. One person is one contact, whether you sent them one message or ten. ManyChat's exact definition is on its pricing and help pages.
How comment-to-DM creates contacts
Every commenter who receives your automated DM becomes a contact for that month. So:
- 50 comments on a normal reel = about 50 contacts
- 5,000 comments on a viral reel = about 5,000 contacts
The contact count is roughly your total commenters for the month.
Why it is hard to predict
Reels reach is uneven. You cannot know in advance which reel will get 20 comments and which will get 2,000. A per-contact plan means the bill is decided after the fact by Instagram's algorithm.
Estimating your cost
- Add up matching comments on your posts over the last three months.
- Take the highest month, not the average.
- Double it for safety if you are growing.
- Check which plan and overage that implies.
Example with ManyChat's October 2026 tiers: a month with 3,000 commenters sits above Pro's 2,500 included contacts, so you pay Pro plus overage for 500 contacts, or move to Business. See ManyChat pricing in India.
Ways to keep contacts under control
- Use keywords, not "any comment", so only real requests become contacts
- Avoid automations on giveaway posts where thousands comment for fun
- Archive automations on old posts you no longer need
The alternative: flat pricing
Some tools charge a flat monthly price with limits on automations or DMs instead of contacts. The trade-off is a hard monthly cap instead of overage. Which is better depends on your numbers; we work through it in per-contact vs flat pricing.
Frequently asked questions
Does a contact count again next month?
Only if they interact again next month.
Do people who only got a public reply count?
It depends on the platform's definition. Check the help pages of the tool you use.
Can I delete contacts to reduce the bill?
Billing is usually based on activity in the period, not the size of your list. Deleting contacts afterwards may not change it.
Does DM Flow charge per contact?
No. DM Flow plans are flat, with limits shown on the pricing page.
