Instagram does not let you put clickable links in captions or comments. Your bio has one link, and stories let you add a link sticker. That leaves DMs as the best place to hand someone a specific link, and with automation you can do it the moment they ask.
The basic setup
- Connect your Professional Instagram account to a comment-to-DM tool through Instagram's official login.
- Pick the post and the keyword, for example
LINK. - Paste the full URL, starting with
https://. - Write a short message and a button label.
- Tell people in the reel and caption: "Comment LINK and I'll send it to you."
When someone comments the keyword, they receive your message with a button. Tapping it opens the page in Instagram's in-app browser.

Button or plain link?
You can send a link as plain text in the message or attach it to a button. Buttons are better for three reasons:
- They are obvious. A coloured button is easier to tap than a blue URL in a paragraph.
- They hide ugly URLs. Long links with tracking tags look messy and suspicious.
- They say what happens next. "See the dress", "Get the PDF", "Book now".
Keep button labels short. Instagram trims long labels, and DM Flow limits them to 20 characters.
Which link to send
This is where most of the result comes from.
| They commented on | Send | Not |
|---|---|---|
| A reel showing one product | That product page | Your homepage |
| A collection reel | The collection page, filtered | The whole shop |
| A free guide offer | The guide or the sign-up page | Your course sales page |
| A service | A booking form or WhatsApp chat link | Your "about" page |
Every extra tap between the DM and what they wanted loses people.
Make sure the link works on a phone
Almost everyone will open your link inside Instagram on a phone. Before you go live:
- Open the link from a DM on your own phone.
- Check the page loads in under three seconds.
- Check the price and the buy button are visible without scrolling far.
- If it is a Google Form or a PDF, check it opens without asking people to sign in.
Track which post the click came from
Add UTM tags so your analytics can tell which reel produced the sale:
https://yourstore.com/products/kurti-set?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=dm&utm_campaign=reel-kurti-oct
Shopify, WooCommerce and Google Analytics all read these tags. Use a different utm_campaign for each reel. Because the URL sits behind a button, the long link does not look messy.
A two-step flow for better delivery
The first message you send to a commenter is a private reply, and Meta allows only one per comment. If you send the link in that first message, you are done. If you send a short opener with a button instead, like "Tap below and I'll send it", then the tap starts a conversation. That gives you a 24-hour window to send the link and, if useful, a second message later.
The two-step flow has another benefit: people who tap have shown intent, so your link clicks are cleaner to measure. The trade-off is one extra tap. Test both on your audience.
Add a follow-gate if the link is valuable
If you give away something valuable, such as a free guide or a big coupon, you can ask people to follow you before the link is released. The tool checks whether they follow and sends the link once they do. Read follow-gated DMs before you switch it on, because it suits some offers and annoys people on others.
Common problems
- The link is not clickable. It must start with
https://. Also check there are no spaces. - People say they did not get it. Tell them to check message Requests, and add a public reply such as "Sent, check your DMs".
- The page shows an error in Instagram's browser. Some sites block in-app browsers or need a login. Test on a phone first.

Frequently asked questions
Can I send different links for different keywords on the same post?
Yes, if your tool supports more than one automation per post, or one automation per keyword. Many brands use PRICE for the price list and SIZE for the size chart.
Will links in DMs hurt my reach?
There is no evidence that links in DMs affect reach. Comments, which the call to action produces, are a positive signal.
Can I send a WhatsApp link?
Yes. A https://wa.me/ link with your number opens a WhatsApp chat, which many Indian buyers prefer for orders.
Can I send an Amazon or affiliate link?
Yes. Affiliate creators use this widely. Follow the affiliate programme's own disclosure rules.
