If your automation tool says it cannot send messages, or every DM fails with a permissions error, check one setting first: Allow access to messages for connected tools. It tells Instagram that approved apps may send and read DMs on your account.
Where to find it
The exact menu names change a little between app versions, but the path is roughly:
- Open the Instagram app and go to your profile.
- Tap the menu (☰), then Settings and activity.
- Open Messages and story replies.
- Find Message controls or Connected tools.
- Turn on Allow access to messages.
If you cannot find it, search "connected tools" in the settings search bar.
Why it matters
Comment-to-DM tools work through Meta's official API. Even after you connect a tool with Instagram Login and approve its permissions, Instagram keeps this extra switch so you stay in control of your inbox. When it is off, messages from the tool may be refused.
How to check it worked
- Make sure your account is a professional account (Business or Creator).
- Turn the setting on.
- Comment your keyword on your post from a different account.
- Check your tool's activity log. In DM Flow, a refused message shows Instagram's reason next to the comment.
Still not working?
- Reconnect the account in your tool so it gets fresh permissions.
- Make sure you approved all permissions during connect, especially messages and comments.
- Check the account is not restricted by Instagram for something unrelated.
- See Instagram DM not sending: fixes.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to allow access to messages?
Yes, for tools that connect through Meta's official API. You can turn it off any time, and you can remove a tool from your Instagram settings.
Do I need this setting on a personal account?
Automation needs a professional account. Personal accounts cannot use comment-to-DM tools.
Will turning it on change anything for my followers?
No. It only lets your approved tools send and read messages for your account.
