You have seen it on fitness pages, recipe accounts and fashion reels: "Comment LINK and I'll send it to you." A few seconds after commenting, a DM arrives with the link. It is not someone sitting at a phone. It is a comment-to-DM automation, and you can set one up in about ten minutes.
Why creators use it
- Instagram does not allow clickable links in captions. The DM is the closest you can get to a link right under the reel.
- It gets more comments. A clear ask ("comment LINK") turns passive viewers into commenters, and comments help a post's reach.
- It is personal. The link arrives in the viewer's inbox, addressed to them.
- It builds a list. Everyone who commented is now someone you have messaged, and you can see them in your contacts.
How it works behind the scenes
When someone comments, Instagram notifies the automation tool through Meta's official API. The tool checks whether the comment contains your keyword. If it does, it sends one private reply, which is Meta's name for a DM sent in response to a comment. Meta allows one such reply per comment, within 7 days of the comment. Details in Instagram private replies explained.
Setting it up
- Make sure your account is a Business or Creator account.
- Connect it to a comment-to-DM tool. In DM Flow, this goes through Instagram's own permission screen.
- Create an automation on the reel. Set the keyword to
LINK. - Write the public reply, for example "Sent! 📩 check your DMs".
- Write the DM and add the link behind a button.
- Test from another account, then publish your caption.
Wording the call to action
The phrase matters more than people expect. Compare:
- Weak: "Link in bio!"
- Better: "Comment LINK for the link."
- Best: "Comment LINK and I'll DM you the full recipe with quantities."
The best version says what they get, not just that there is a link. A few more patterns:
- "Comment SIZE and I'll send you the size chart for this kurti."
- "Want my exact skincare routine? Comment ROUTINE."
- "Comment PDF for the free 7-day plan."
Put the keyword on screen in the reel, not just in the caption. Many people never expand the caption. We have 40 ready lines in comment CTA ideas for reels.
Choosing the keyword
- Short and uppercase in the caption so it stands out:
LINK,GUIDE,RECIPE. - One word. Phrases get misspelled.
- Specific to the post when you run several automations, so
SAREEon one reel andLEHENGAon another. - Add likely variants. If you ask for
RECIPE, people will also typerecipe pls. Matching inside a sentence handles that. For spelling variants likerecepie, add them as extra keywords.
Should you ask people to follow first?
Many creators add "follow me and comment LINK". With a follow-gate, the tool can enforce it: the link is only released once the person follows. It works well for valuable free content. For product links, it can cost sales, because a buyer who just wants the price does not want an extra step. See follow-gated DMs.
What to send in the DM
Keep it short:
Here's the full recipe you asked for, {name} 🍫 Quantities, timings and the tin size I use are all in there.

If you want something in return, ask after you have delivered, not before. "If you make it, tag me!" works better than a wall of conditions.
Mistakes to avoid
- Forgetting to switch the automation on before the reel goes live. The first hour of comments matters most.
- A broken or slow link. Test it in Instagram's in-app browser on your phone.
- Using a keyword in the reel that differs from the automation, such as saying "comment GUIDE" when the automation listens for
LINK. - No public reply. Without it, people who do not follow you may not notice the DM sitting in Requests.
Frequently asked questions
Do people have to follow me to get the DM?
No, unless you switch on a follow-gate. Non-followers receive the DM in their message Requests.
Can I use emojis as the keyword?
In DM Flow, yes. An emoji keyword such as 🔥 matches when the comment contains it. Words are easier to explain, though.
What if someone comments LINK twice?
Each comment is a separate event, and Meta allows one private reply per comment, so a second comment can bring a second DM. In practice very few people comment twice, and a duplicate link does no harm.
Can I do this on old reels?
You can switch the automation on for any post. It replies to new comments from that moment. Comments older than 7 days cannot be answered by private reply.
