Your reel is getting comments, ManyChat says the automation is live, and nobody is getting the DM. This checklist goes from the most common cause to the least. Most problems are fixed in the first five.
First: test properly
Comment your keyword from a second Instagram account, on a post published in the last few days. Two reasons:
- Comment triggers fire once per person per post. If you already tested, your new comment will not trigger again.
- Private replies can only be sent within 7 days of the comment, so testing on an old comment proves nothing.
If the second account gets nothing at all, the problem is the connection or the setup (causes 1 to 6). If it works for you but not for some customers, it is rules or limits (causes 7 to 11).
1. "Allow access to messages" is off
The most common cause. In the Instagram app: Settings and privacy, Messages and story replies, Message controls, Connected tools, and turn on Allow access to messages. Without it, no tool can send DMs for you.
2. The automation is not actually live
Open the automation and check it says Live. Blocks with red errors, empty steps or an unattached message stop it publishing. On the free plan, a flow that contains a Pro-only block will not go live.
3. The connection broke after a password change
Changing your Instagram or Facebook password, or your username, can break the connection. In ManyChat, refresh Instagram permissions from settings. If that fails, log out of ManyChat and Instagram, log back in, and refresh again.
4. The account is not a Professional account
Personal accounts cannot use messaging automation. Switch to Business or Creator in Settings and privacy, Account type and tools.
5. The wrong post or keyword
- "Next post" attached itself to a different post than you expected.
- The keyword does not match what people type. Check spelling, add variations (
price, rate, kitna, cost). - You picked "specific post" and then reposted the reel as a new post.
6. The post type is not supported
Automations generally work on normal posts and reels shared publicly. Close Friends posts, some ads and boosted posts, trial reels and reposts can behave differently. Test on a normal public reel.
7. You ran out of active contacts
ManyChat's free plan includes 25 active contacts a month. When they are used up, new people stop getting messages until the next month or until you upgrade. Check the count in billing settings. See ManyChat free plan limits and active contacts explained.
8. The person already got a reply
Each commenter gets one private reply per comment, and comment triggers fire once per person per post. Repeat comments from the same person are ignored by design.
9. The DM landed in Requests
If the person does not follow you, the DM may land in their Message requests folder. It was sent; they just did not see it. Add to your public reply: "Sent! Check your DMs (or Requests 📩)".
10. Two tools are fighting over the account
If more than one automation tool is connected, they can block each other or both send. Remove tools you no longer use in Instagram's Apps and websites settings, and never run two tools on the same post.
11. Instagram or ManyChat is having a problem
Sometimes it is not you. Check ManyChat's status page and the ManyChat community for reports from other users before rebuilding anything.
Still stuck?
Contact ManyChat support with the post link, the keyword, the time of a test comment and the commenting username. Specific details get faster answers.
If you only need comment-to-DM and are tired of debugging a big platform, a focused tool may be simpler. DM Flow shows an Activity log for every comment with the reason it did or did not send, for example "No live automation is watching this post" or "Link sent", and support is on WhatsApp in Indian hours. Compare: DM Flow vs ManyChat. For DM Flow-specific fixes, see automated DM not sending.

Frequently asked questions
Why did my ManyChat automation suddenly stop working?
Usually a broken connection after a password change, the free plan's contact limit running out, or "Allow access to messages" being switched off. Check those three first.
Why does ManyChat not reply to my own comment?
Comment triggers fire once per person per post, and the connected account testing itself is unreliable. Use a second account.
How long does ManyChat take to send the DM?
Usually seconds. Busy periods and Meta's rate limits can add a short delay.
Can ManyChat DM people who commented a week ago?
No. Instagram allows a private reply only within 7 days of the comment.
Is there an easier tool than ManyChat for comment-to-DM?
For comment-to-DM only, tools like DM Flow are simpler to set up and priced flat in rupees. See ManyChat alternatives for India.
