Auto DMs are only annoying when people did not ask for them. When someone comments "link" and gets the link in five seconds, they are happy. Here is how to stay on the right side of that line.
Seven rules
- Only reply to people who asked. Comment-to-DM through Meta's API already guarantees this; cold DMs are not allowed.
- Say in the reel what will happen. "Comment LINK and I'll DM you."
- Deliver exactly what you promised. Not a sales pitch instead of the freebie.
- One link, one clear message. No walls of text.
- No repeat messages unless the person replies.
- Make it easy to reach a human. "Reply if you need help."
- Be careful with "any comment" triggers. People who just wrote "congrats" may not want a DM.

Watch the signals
- People replying "stop" or "why did I get this?" means your trigger is too broad.
- Many people not tapping the button means your opening message is unclear.

Frequently asked questions
Can auto DMs get my account flagged as spam?
Not when they go only to people who commented and the message is relevant. Spam flags come from unwanted, repetitive messages.
Should I use a follow-gate if I'm worried about annoying people?
A friendly follow-gate is fine. Explain why: "Follow so you don't miss the next one."
How many messages are too many?
Keep it to the opening message and the link unless the person keeps the conversation going.
