In India, Instagram is a sales channel, not just a branding one. Customers ask "price?", "COD available?" and "size chart pls" in the comments, and they expect an answer before they scroll to the next seller. DM automation answers those questions instantly, at any hour.
This guide is written for Indian sellers: what to automate, how buyers here behave, what to pay, and the rules to stay within.
How Indian buyers use Instagram
A few patterns show up across fashion, beauty, food and home brands:
- Price is asked in public. "Price?" is the most common comment on product reels. Many sellers reply "DM" or "price in DM", which costs a step.
- WhatsApp closes the sale. Many buyers prefer to place the order on WhatsApp, pay by UPI and ask about COD there.
- Comments come late at night. Peak scrolling is often 9 pm to midnight, when most small teams are offline.
- Hinglish is normal. "Kitna hai", "available hai?", "sizes?".
Automation fits these habits well. It answers the price question in the inbox within seconds, at midnight, and can hand the buyer to WhatsApp if that is where you take orders.
What to automate first
- Price requests. A keyword set like
price, rate, kitnasends the price list or product page. See automating price replies. - Catalogue requests.
CATALOGUEorDESIGNSsends a link to all designs, or a PDF. See sending your catalogue in DMs. - Size questions.
SIZEsends the size chart. - Festive offers.
DIWALIsends the sale page or a code. See festive sale automation.
Sending buyers to WhatsApp
If you take orders on WhatsApp, use a WhatsApp link as the DM button:
https://wa.me/919876543210?text=Hi%2C%20I%20want%20to%20order%20the%20blue%20kurti
The buyer taps, WhatsApp opens with the message ready, and they press send. You now have their number and an order conversation. Change the text for each product so you know what they want before you open the chat.
What it costs
Tools fall into two pricing styles:
- Per contact, in US dollars. Many international tools charge by the number of people you message each month. A viral reel can push you into a higher tier, and card payments in dollars add foreign transaction fees and GST on top.
- Flat, in rupees. Indian tools usually charge a fixed monthly amount with limits on automations or DMs, paid by UPI or card.
As a rough guide, Indian comment-to-DM tools range from free plans to a few hundred rupees a month for small sellers, and higher for agencies. DM Flow has a free plan and flat rupee plans listed on the pricing page. Compare plans by the number of comments your best reel gets, not by your average post. More on this in per-contact vs flat pricing.
The rules (same in India as everywhere)
- Use only tools that connect through Meta's official API. Never give your password to a tool.
- Meta allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days.
- After the buyer replies or taps a button, you have 24 hours to continue the conversation.
- Meta caps how many automated messages an account sends per hour, which matters on viral reels.
- If you collect phone numbers or emails, India's DPDP Act 2023 applies. Say what you will use them for. See Instagram leads and the DPDP Act.
A one-week starting plan
| Day | Do this |
|---|---|
| 1 | Switch to a Professional account, connect a tool |
| 2 | Read your last 20 posts' comments, list the words buyers use |
| 3 | Set up a price automation on your best-performing reel |
| 4 | Write two public reply variations and test from a second account |
| 5 | Post a new reel with "Comment PRICE" on screen |
| 6 | Check the log: matches, DMs sent, link taps |
| 7 | Fix the message or the keyword, then add a second automation |
Mistakes Indian sellers make
- "Price in DM" without a DM. If you write it, send it. Automation makes this effortless.
- Sending a homepage link. Send the exact product or a filtered collection.
- Ignoring COD questions. If you offer COD, say so in the DM. It is a top reason for hesitation.
- Using password-based "growth" apps. These are the main reason Indian accounts get action-blocked.
